What makes Taronga different
Most city zoos are landlocked and forgettable. Taronga sits on a hillside directly across the harbour from the CBD, and several of its enclosures — including the giraffes and the seal show — are positioned so the animals appear to have the Opera House and Bridge as a backdrop. It's a genuinely striking setting, and reason enough on its own for a visit even if you're lukewarm on zoos generally.
The ferry ride over is part of the experience too — a short, scenic harbour crossing that beats arriving by road.
What's worth timing your visit around
- The Sky Safari cable car carries you from the wharf up to the zoo's upper entrance, with harbour views the whole way — worth doing at least one direction even if you walk the other.
- The seal show, included in general admission, runs multiple times a day and is genuinely well done rather than a token add-on.
- Free-flight bird show, held in an amphitheatre with the harbour as a backdrop — check the day's schedule when you arrive, as timing varies.
- The Australian native section, including platypus, echidna, and Tasmanian devil enclosures, is a good option if your time in the country is limited and you want a single stop for native wildlife.
🎟️ Local tip
Buy your ferry ticket and zoo admission as a combined pass if your transport card supports it — it's usually cheaper than paying for the ferry and the zoo gate price separately, and skips a queue.
Is it worth the price?
If you're only in Sydney briefly and have to choose between Taronga and a wildlife park further out (like Featherdale), Taronga wins on setting and convenience, even if some standalone wildlife parks offer more hands-on animal encounters for a lower price. For a half-day family activity that also delivers a proper harbour view, it earns its ticket price.
Getting there
Ferries leave Circular Quay regularly for Taronga Zoo Wharf; the crossing takes about 12 minutes, and the Sky Safari cable car (or a signposted uphill walk) covers the rest of the way to the main entrance.
