Why it's worth the detour from Manly
North Head, a short trip from Manly, forms one side of the harbour's dramatic ocean entrance (South Head, near Watsons Bay, forms the other) — and delivers genuinely some of the best coastal views near Sydney, looking back across the harbour mouth toward the city skyline in the distance, without the crowds of the more famous inner-harbour viewpoints.

North Head is also home to the Australian War Memorial-run North Fort site, with genuine 19th and 20th-century coastal defence fortifications open to explore — a lower-key, more hands-on complement to Canberra's Australian War Memorial if that history interests you but a trip to the capital doesn't fit your schedule.
What to actually do
- Walk the North Head Sanctuary trails, covering genuine remnant bushland alongside the clifftop views, and a good spot for native wildlife spotting away from the city.
- Visit North Fort's fortifications, exploring old gun emplacements and tunnels with genuine military history dating back over a century.
- Watch for whales in season (see our whale watching guide) — the elevated clifftop position here is a genuinely strong vantage point.
- Time a visit for sunset, when the light over the harbour entrance and city skyline in the distance is at its best.
How it compares to South Head
Where South Head (near Watsons Bay) is easier to reach and busier as a result, North Head requires slightly more effort — a bus or a longer walk from Manly — and rewards that effort with a genuinely quieter, equally dramatic experience.
Getting there
Buses run from Manly (see our neighbourhood guide) to North Head, or it's a longer but scenic walk of around 45 minutes to an hour from the Manly ferry wharf for those wanting to make a full day of it.
