Why stay here
Manly sits on a narrow peninsula facing the open ocean, reachable from the city only by a 30-minute ferry ride that's genuinely one of the best-value scenic experiences in Sydney — the same fare as any other ferry trip, for harbour views the whole way out. That ferry ride alone makes Manly worth the trip, even before you've reached the beach.
Once there, you get a proper beach town feel: a wide surf beach, a pedestrian mall lined with cafés, and a noticeably slower pace than the city. It's a good base if you want beach time with easy access back to the CBD, though the last ferry runs earlier than you might expect — check the timetable if you're planning a late dinner.
Getting oriented
The Corso, a pedestrian strip, connects the ferry wharf (on the harbour side) to Manly Beach (on the ocean side) in about a five-minute walk. Most of what you need — cafés, shops, the surf beach — sits along or just off this strip.

Sit on the right-hand side of the ferry heading out from Circular Quay for the best views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as you leave, and the Heads (the harbour's dramatic ocean entrance) as you arrive.
What to do while you're here
- Walk the Manly Scenic Walkway toward Spit Bridge, a quieter, more bushland-heavy coastal walk than the famous Bondi to Coogee one, with genuinely good harbour views and far fewer people.
- Snorkel at Shelly Beach, a short walk around the headland from the main beach — a protected cove with clear water and a surprising amount of marine life for somewhere this close to the city.
- Visit Manly Sea Life Sanctuary if travelling with kids, or just for the shark tunnel.
- Watch the sunset from North Steyne, the quieter end of the main beach, away from the Corso crowds.
Where it gets crowded
Summer weekends see the ferry queues stretch well beyond the wharf — arrive early or expect to wait for a later service. The beach itself rarely feels overcrowded even then, given its size.
Getting here
Ferries leave Circular Quay regularly throughout the day; the Fast Ferry service cuts the trip to around 18 minutes for a higher fare, while the standard ferry takes 30 minutes and costs the same as any other harbour trip.
