Why this walk is worth doing
The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is free, needs no booking, and delivers more consistently good ocean views per kilometre than almost anything else in the city. It runs along clifftops and boardwalks for about six kilometres, passing half a dozen beaches, an ocean pool, and — depending on the season — a genuine chance of spotting whales offshore.
How long it actually takes
Budget around two hours at a comfortable pace if you're walking it straight through, but the beaches along the way are worth stopping at, so realistically it's closer to half a day if you want to swim, eat, and actually enjoy the smaller beaches rather than just pass them.
The beaches you'll pass
Bondi Beach → Tamarama
The walk starts at Bondi's south end, past Icebergs Pool, and climbs to Tamarama — a small, dramatic beach known locally for a stronger rip current than its size suggests. Better for a look than a swim unless conditions are calm.
Bronte
A genuinely excellent local beach with a good café strip and a sea pool at its southern end — worth a proper stop rather than a walk-through.
Clovelly & Gordons Bay
A narrow, sheltered inlet that's more like a saltwater swimming pool than a beach — one of the calmest, most family-friendly swimming spots on the whole route, and popular with snorkellers.
Coogee
The walk's endpoint — a proper beach town in its own right, with enough cafés and pubs to make a good final stop before heading back into the city.
🐋 Local tip
Between May and November, keep an eye on the horizon — this stretch of coast is a genuine whale-watching spot during the migration season, no boat required.
Getting there and back
Start at Bondi (bus from Bondi Junction station, or direct bus from the CBD) and finish at Coogee, where buses run back to the city — no need to double back the way you came.
