Getting into the city from the airport
Sydney Airport (officially Kingsford Smith Airport) sits genuinely close to the city centre by international standards — around 8km from the CBD — which makes several transport options viable depending on your budget and luggage situation.
- Train: The fastest option at around 13 minutes to Central Station, but carries a separate station access fee on top of the standard distance fare (see our getting around guide) — noticeably pricier than an equivalent non-airport trip.
- Rideshare or taxi: Convenient for groups or heavy luggage, with a taxi rank and rideshare pickup zone clearly signed at both terminals — expect surge pricing at very peak times.
- Airport shuttle buses: Often the cheapest option for one or two people once the train's station fee is factored in, though slower and dependent on other passengers' drop-off points.

If cost matters more than the extra 10–15 minutes, compare the train's total fare (including the station access fee) against a shared shuttle price before assuming the train is automatically cheapest — for one or two travellers, it often isn't.
What to expect at immigration
Most travellers with an approved visa (see our visa guide) can use the SmartGate electronic passport gates, which are generally faster than a staffed counter — check the eligibility signage as you approach, since it varies by passport and age. Have your passport and any required arrival documentation ready before you reach the gate to keep the queue moving.
Customs and biosecurity
Australia has genuinely strict biosecurity rules — declare any food, plant material, or wooden items on your arrival card, even if you're not sure they're a problem. Undeclared items that should have been declared can carry significant fines, while declaring something unnecessary costs you nothing worse than a quick inspection. When in doubt, declare it.

- The domestic and international terminals are separate buildings, connected by a shuttle bus or the train — factor in extra time if you have a connecting domestic flight.
- Luggage trolleys typically require a small fee at international arrivals — worth having a card or small cash amount ready if you have heavy luggage.
