Card, not cash
Australia is one of the most card-friendly countries in the world — contactless payment is the default almost everywhere, including small cafés, markets, and even some street stalls. Carrying a wad of cash "just in case" is largely unnecessary in Sydney; a debit or credit card with low or no foreign transaction fees will cover the vast majority of your trip.

Check whether your card charges foreign transaction fees — a surprising number of everyday cards do, and it adds up fast on a trip made up of dozens of small transactions. A fee-free travel card is worth arranging before you land.
Do you need to tip?
Not really, and this catches a lot of visitors off guard. Tipping isn't part of Australian culture the way it is in the US — hospitality staff are paid a proper minimum wage regardless of tips, so there's no social expectation to add anything extra. That said, it's become more common in recent years to round up a bill or leave a small amount for genuinely excellent service, particularly at nicer restaurants — but it's entirely optional, not stiffing anyone, and never expected on top of every transaction the way it is elsewhere.
What things actually cost
Sydney is not a cheap city, and it's worth budgeting accordingly:
- A casual café coffee and light meal for two runs to a moderate amount — expect city prices similar to other major global cities.
- A sit-down dinner with drinks at a mid-range restaurant is a genuine expense, more than in many other countries' equivalent restaurants.
- Public transport is comparatively affordable, especially with the daily fare cap (see our getting around guide) — one of the better value parts of a Sydney trip.
- Accommodation is where costs vary most — inner-city hotels carry a real premium compared to Inner West or outer suburb options with a longer commute.
A general note on budgeting
Sydney rewards a mixed approach: pay for the handful of experiences that genuinely matter to you (a nice dinner, the BridgeClimb, a harbour tour), and save elsewhere with free activities like the coastal walks, beaches, and parks, which cost nothing and are frequently the best part of a Sydney trip regardless of budget.
