Why it's worth crossing the Bridge for
North Sydney and Kirribilli sit directly across the harbour from Circular Quay, connected by the Harbour Bridge and a short ferry ride, and offer something the southern side genuinely can't: a view back across the water that takes in the Opera House, the Bridge, and the city skyline together in one frame. Kirribilli specifically is home to Kirribilli House and Admiralty House, the Sydney residences of Australia's Prime Minister and Governor-General respectively.
North Sydney itself is more of a business district — office towers and a genuine weekday buzz that quiets considerably on weekends — while Kirribilli, tucked right at the harbour's edge, is a small, leafy residential pocket worth the short walk from the station.
Getting oriented
Milsons Point and Kirribilli sit at the harbour's edge, an easy walk from each other and from North Sydney station, which sits slightly further inland at the district's commercial centre.
📸 Local tip
The small park at the end of Kirribilli Avenue, right on the water, delivers one of the best free Opera House and Bridge photo angles in the city — considerably less crowded than the Circular Quay side, and worth the short detour if you're already crossing the Bridge.
What to do while you're here
- Walk to the Kirribilli waterfront park for the photo angle above, especially good at sunset with the light hitting the Opera House sails.
- Visit North Sydney Olympic Pool (see our ocean pools guide), directly beneath the Bridge's northern end, for a genuinely striking pool-with-a-view swim.
- Browse the Kirribilli Markets, held periodically in the grounds of the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre — smaller and more local than the CBD's weekend markets.
- Walk across the Harbour Bridge (see our Bridge guide) from Circular Quay, arriving directly into Kirribilli on foot.
Where it gets crowded
Rarely — this is a genuinely quiet corner of the harbour even on weekends, which is a large part of its appeal against the more crowded southern side.
Getting here
Milsons Point and North Sydney stations both sit on the North Shore line, one stop across the Bridge from the CBD; ferries also connect North Sydney directly to Circular Quay.
